Working with what we’ve got! Stu Girling workshop

SATURDAY 29th SEPTEMBER 2018

10:00 – 17:00

£70

SESSION 1: Unravelling the Gatekeepers

In Ashtanga Yoga there are particular postures that are often referred to as ‘gatekeepers’ because they frequently halt our progression through the series.
This session will look at tricky postures such as Bujipidasana, Marichyasana B & D, Supta Kurmasana and Pasasana as vehicles for understanding how to deconstruct difficult postures into understandable elements.

SESSION 2: Fascia and Biotensegrity

There is lots of interest in the emerging information about fascia and how it might influence our yoga practice. In this workshop, we explore what is meant by fascia, what its purpose is and what use we can make of our growing appreciation of it. We also look at a proposed model (biotensegrity) for trying to understand how we might incorporate this knowledge into a more comprehensive explanation of human movement and stability.

Both sessions will be practical and interactive.

Testimonials

"Dorset Retreat 2018 was my first retreat and I loved it. It was friendly and relaxed yet we worked hard and focused on improving our yoga practice. Somehow everything felt right (the place, the people, the weather, the food and the amazing yoga practice) and if you like the English countryside and Yoga then it doesn't get much better than this. I felt lucky to be part of this amazing weekend.
Thank you, Sophie and Katia."

Viviene

"The weekend Yoga retreat was a perfect balance of Yin and Yang Yoga, a variety of nourishing, home-cooked food (of which there was an abundance) and opportunities to completely immerse yourself in Dorset’s breath-taking coast. Being away from the business of daily life, it felt amazing to be able to take my time and dive a little deeper into each Asana, with Sophie and Katia’s wonderful support. Thank you so much for hosting this experience and creating such a joyful sense of community- I look forward to the next one!

Scott has been practising ashtanga yoga since 2002 and teaching since 2003. He is the co-founder and main teacher at Stillpoint Yoga London (founded in 2009 with the late Ozge Karabiyik). Scott lives with his wife Louise and three sons in Kent and has travelled an hour to teach the 3.5 hour morning self-practice classes every day since 2011 when the classes moved from 3 to 5 days per week (Monday-Friday).

Scott’s teaching is greatly inspired and influenced by John Scott, Lucy Crawford and Manju Pattabhi Jois. Scott met John in 2001 and instantly felt the deep connection to the ashtanga yoga lineage through John’s teaching and his relationship with Sri K. Pattabhi Jois. Scott connected with John and Lucy in workshops and assisted self-practice weeks through the years, and in 2008/2009 he undertook a 2-month intensive teacher training at their Stillpoint yoga retreat in New Zealand. It was here that Scott met the late Ozge Karabiyik, and between them, they created Stillpoint Yoga London.

In 2014 Scott became one of the few teachers to receive the 500hr certification from John Scott Yoga to teach the primary and intermediate series of ashtanga yoga and was recommended by John Scott to be listed on ashtanga.coma highly regarded website that promotes teachers of ashtanga yoga around the world.

Manju Pattabhi Jois has been teaching workshops at Stillpoint Yoga London since 2012 and Manju have created a close relationship with SYL and Scott. In 2016 Manju authorised Scott to teach Ashtanga Yoga.

Scott is registered as a senior yoga teacher with Yoga Alliance UK and he has also undergone extensive training with Clear Mind Institute, gaining their level 1, 2  & 3 certificate in Mindfulness and Compassion.

Scott teaches with encouragement, insight, and integrity to the ashtanga yoga lineage he has had access to. He adheres to the authentic tradition left by Sri K Pattabhi Jois, assisting practitioners in discovering how the practice can unfold, not only personally on the mat, but also in the wider context of daily life.

Description

The Feldenkrais Method® is an educational method focusing on learning and movement, which can bring about improved movement and enhanced functioning.
It is named after its originator, Moshe Feldenkrais (1904-1984), an engineer and physicist as well as a Judo teacher. By heightening our awareness of our movement, breathing and posture, the Feldenkrais Method® brings us closer to realising our full human potential. Bringing this into our lives, we learn to move more freely, with greater ease, flexibility and grace. The Method can permanently improve our posture, balance and coordination, awakening our innate capacity for life-long vitality and continuing self-development.

Workshop Description

A Feldenkrais introductory workshop with an emphasis on finding easier movements in the shoulder girdle, chest and upper back.
In this introductory workshop we will explore various movements of our arms and shoulders in the context or whole movement patterns. This will help us to reduce unnecessary effort, release tension and find easier and more comfortable ways to move. Using this newly found freedom will facilitate our breathing and the mobility of neighbouring areas such as the neck, chest and upper back. It can further influence and inform your yoga practice or teaching.
There will be room for questions and observations.

About Sabine

With a background in education and a strong interest in movement, Sabine enrolled in my original Feldenkrais training in Italy in 1993. Since completing her training in 1997, she has been developing her private practice, working with children and adults, alongside teaching regular classes and workshops. Over the years Sabine attended numerous advanced trainings working with senior Feldenkrais trainers in different countries. To deepen her understanding of the Method further, she took part in a Feldenkrais mentoring course (2003-2006) in Amsterdam. She later trained as a Child'Space Practitioner in Amsterdam (2011-2013). The Child’Space Method applies the principles of the Feldenkrais Method to working with babies and infants. This course was invaluable in her understanding of human development and functioning.

Manju Pattabhi Jois has been teaching workshops at Stillpoint Yoga London since 2012 and Manju has created a close relationship with SYL and Scott.

Scott teaches with encouragement, insight and integrity to the ashtanga yoga lineage he has had access to. He adheres to the authentic tradition left by Sri K Pattabhi Jois, assisting practitioners in discovering how the practice can unfold, not only personally on the mat, but also in the wider context of daily life.

Yoga Nidra Workshop with James Reeves

Sunday 24th September

  • Date: Sunday 24th September
  • 2:00pm – 5:00pm
  • £35
We are very excited to have our first Yoga Nidra workshop at Yoga Reading with the fantastic James Reeves founder of Restful Being
yoga nidra: how to access your deepest, wisest self

Occasionally in our everyday lives we catch a glimpse of our deepest, wisest self, and typically it feels like a shot of inexplicable bliss, or a moment of sudden, unanticipated insight – an ‘epiphany’. These experiences often come in situations where we have unknowingly ‘let go’ – sometimes on holiday, maybe as we surface from a deep sleep, or perhaps simply in a second’s gaze out the window amidst a busy train journey.

In this workshop we’re going to explore what causes these moments and how they relate to ‘yoga’. We will learn how to readily access this state of being and use this aspect of our greater self to enhance, navigate and find peace within our lives.

Over this three-hour workshop, you will:

  • learn research-based & neuroscience-founded techniques to establish a quiet mind
  • explore how surfing between the stages of sleep can be used to effortlessly enter deep meditative states
  • be taken beyond the mind and uncover your essential self as already peaceful,
experiencing your interconnectedness with all of life

Join James and learn how to naturally unveil what lies constant and unyielding behind all aspects of your experience: presence, peace, a natural joy and heart-felt contentment.

“James’ heartfelt gentleness and masterful wisdom shine through in his teachings… His expertise lies in his ability to light the path for others to find their own way.” Richard Miller, PhD. Founder, Executive Director and President of the Board of Directors Integrative Restoration Institute (IRI)

About James

Founder of Restful Being and the Integrative Restoration Institute’s Director For Europe, James has studied with a wide range of teachers, taking favourite insights and practices from the schools of Hatha, Tantra, Advaita Vedanta and Sankhya philosophy. James’ greatest inspiration has been the work of Richard Miller, PhD. Richard founded the Integrative Restoration Institute (IRI) in the US and established the iRest Yoga Nidra protocol, a system of deep relaxation and meditative inquiry. James is currently the only IRI-sponsored teacher trainer in Europe. He has worked with organizations such as Oxford University, Oxfam and Khiron House Trauma Clinic, and even been jetted off to the Oscars (though not down the red carpet, sadly). James is also a regular teacher of online yoga classes at www.ekhartyoga.com

Astanga Workshop with Phillipa Asher

Saturday 2nd – Sunday 3rd September

  • Date: Saturday 2nd – Sunday 3rd September
  • £120 whole weekend.
  • £35 per session (if available)
About Phillipa

From London, Philippa Asher is one of a few Ashtanga yoga practitioners in the world (and the only British woman), to be Certified to teach the traditional Ashtanga yoga method by Sri K Pattabhi Jois. She has learned the Primary, Intermediate, Advanced A and Advanced B Series directly from Guruji and Sharath (at the Krishna Pattabhi Jois Ashtanga Yoga Institute in Mysore, India) and shares the Ashtanga system, internationally.

After a vocational ballet school training from age twelve and twenty-five years of studying and teaching dance at universities and ballet companies all over the UK, Philippa randomly walked into an Ashtanga yoga class in London. It was a life-changing incident, that made complete sense.

From the late 1990s, she began learning the Ashtanga system, daily before work (in the media, film and music industries). For over sixteen years she has studied for several months each year at KPJAYI in Mysore, practising under the guidance of revered guru Sri K Pattabhi Jois and his grandson Sharath Jois.

In 2006, Philippa established and ran Triyoga Soho’s Ashtanga self-practice programme in London. She taught there for five years before relocating to South India, to build her own shala (on a coffee estate in Sakleshpur, in the Western Ghats). ASHTANGA NIRVṚTA is a stunning homestay yoga retreat, which aims to bring Ashtanga yoga to all levels of practitioners, in nature.

As well as teaching Mysore-style Ashtanga guided self-practice, led classes and workshops at ASHTANGA NIRVṚTA, Philippa also leads guest workshops and self-practice residencies at studios in Europe, London and on retreats worldwide. Her approach to sharing yoga asana (from beginners to more seasoned practitioners), is serious, yet light-hearted and joyful. Her emphasis is on good technique, safe alignment, the synchronisation of tristhana (breath, gaze points and movement) and passing on the exact method, as taught by Guruji.

About the Workshop

Too often too much we are trying to get somewhere. This Yin yoga workshop gives us a chance to slow down and to stay in shapes for several minutes. ANATOMY IN ASANA WEEKEND WITH Melanie Cooper

SATURDAY 5TH + SUNDAY 6TH SEPTEMBER

ABOUT THE WORKSHOP

In this workshop we will explore the anatomy of Back Bends, Forward Bends and Twists so we can better understand what we are actually doing in our physical yoga practice. This workshop is suitable for interested students and teachers alike

Saturday 5th September

10am-12.30pm

Introduction  to Anatomy

In this first session together we will explore our bones, the main muscle groups and each major joint in the body. We will keep it simple and relevant to our yoga practice. We will look at questions such as what is actually happening in our body when we are doing yoga asana? How can we make it safe? How can we make it feel good? How can we work towards a body that is open and stable?
2-4.30pm

The Anatomy of Back Bends

In this session we will look at what muscle groups can restrict a backbend and how we can work on opening. We will explore step by step all the major groups of muscles that are involved. We will look at the importance of alignment and how to make it right for each individual body. We will experiment with how to use our foundation and how to create space and length and hopefully find more ease and comfort in a backbend.

Sunday 6th September

10-12.30pm

The Anatomy of Forward Bends

There is more to forward bends than the hamstrings! In this session we will explore forward bends in an experiential way. You will feel in your body what is happening as we fold forwards what can restrict us and what can help us. We will look at how different body types can make forward folding safe and comfortable. We will look at common things that can go wrong, how to avoid them and how to heal them when things do go wrong.

2-4.30pm

The Anatomy of Twists

How can we safely go into twists? What difference can body proportions make? What muscles should engage and which relax? Can we go too far into a twist? (yes!) and do we really ‘literally wring out’ the internal organs? In this session we will answer these and many more questions about twists. We will explore which muscles are lengthening, which are contracting, how to go into a twist safely and how to breathe to make twists deeper and more comfortable.

  • The approach will be very practical and hands on and experience based.
  • You will learn how to make these poses right for different body-types.
  • You will learn what might be your physical challenges and how to work with your body in an intelligent safe way.

Ashtanga Weekend with Joey Miles

SATURDAY 31ST JANUARY – SUNDAY 1ST FEBRUARY

Timings:

SATURDAY + SUNDAY 10am – 12pm  MYSORE STYLE PRACTICE

This is the traditional way to practice ashtanga yoga, receive individual guidance and hands on adjustment while practicing in a small group. This is ideal for seasoned practitioners who no longer feel the need to be told what to do next, having committed an appropriate string of poses to memory observe the subtle daily workings of the body, mind and emotions as you unravel any negative patterning and cultivate integration, wisdom and freedom.

SATURDAY 31st JANUARY1 – 4PM

Standing postures deconstructed:

  • This workshop deconstructs the alignment and actions within the different groupings of standing posture: Forward bends, Laterals and Twists . Links between, for example Trikonasana and Vasishtasana will show how the same key principles of alignment apply across the board – from simple to advanced poses.

Jumping through and back, handstands and headstands:

  • We will examine the actions across the shoulder girdle and learn the techniques used (from the very first step back in a sun salute) that plug you into the earth and thereby allow the graceful float up to handstand.

SUNDAY IST FEBRUARY 1.00 – 4PM

Backbends are re-examined and re-named – Extending the front body.

  • We will learn the key actions in the feet, legs and pelvis that create an optimal kinetic chain of movement up through the spine, thereby back bending without compression or pain.
  • This workshop uses the poses from the beginning of the intermediate series – students do not have to have a perfect primary series however this is not appropriate fro beginners.
